A “flat” hiring climate is anticipated for the Calgary area in the third quarter of this year, while Edmonton area employers expect a “conservative” hiring climate, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey released on Tuesday.

“Survey data reveals that 11 per cent of employers (in Calgary) plan to hire for the upcoming quarter, while six per cent anticipate cutbacks,” said Randy Upright, CEO of Manpower’s Alberta region, in a news release.

“Another 83 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter. … With seasonal variations removed from the data, Calgary’s third-quarter net employment outlook of four per cent is a three percentage point decrease when compared to the previous quarterly outlook. It is also a two percentage point decrease from the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a reserved hiring pace for the upcoming months.”

In Edmonton, Upright said survey data reveals that 13 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter, while seven per cent anticipate cutbacks.

The remaining 80 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter, he said.    

“With seasonal variations removed from the data, Edmonton’s third quarter net employment outlook of seven per cent is a two percentage point decrease when compared to the previous quarterly outlook. It is also a six percentage point decrease from the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a modest hiring pace for the upcoming months.”
