Performance and graphics quality with modern GPUs reached incredible heights, and you can now play in 8K resolution with a decent framerate. Visual effects like Ray Tracing also help with optical excellence. Simultaneously, in the past few years, we’ve seen a trend of deck-building games took off on the PC market.
In the early 2000s, players collected physical cards of Pokemon or Magic the Gathering. Now, you can play Hearthstone and many follow-up clones, and to be fair, some incredibly original titles.
Here are some of the best turn-based deck builder games currently available on PC.
Are You Ready for the Second Season of Witcher?
The Witcher is a top-rated franchise of games based on fantasy novels. The books also served as the basis for a TV show, with the second season soon on streaming platforms. In addition, the Witcher has so many spin-off products, from online slots to an excellent card game called Gwent.
We saw the first glimpse of Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it has since taken off as a deck collecting game. You play one-on-one with a carefully prepared deck, and the goal is to have more points than the opponent. Cards don’t have the same complexity as some other titles, but you can build compelling decks.
League of Legends Champions in a Card Game?
Legends of Runterra is one of the leading Heartstone contenders. You play the game in the League of Legends universe with familiar champions from the competition. The cards have recognizable abilities and effects, and the critical thing for gameplay is mana. You can attack or defend with the cards, and you collect the cards with the reward system while playing. There are 40 spots in the deck for cards, and you can have up to six champions.
Digital Version of Magic: The Gathering Arena
The most popular physical card game out there is probably Magic the Gathering. The complexity of Magic the Gathering is way above Hearthstone, Gwent and other digital contenders, but there are fewer graphic effects. The game did include animations to attract new players that didn’t play the Gathering in physical form. A stacking deck is pivotal for success, and new players might struggle with the tactics.
Hop in the Elder Scrolls Universe
The Elder Scrolls: Legends borrow much of its gameplay from Heartstone, which is not necessarily bad, but it also has enough new features backed by the storied Bethesda RPG franchise. The development team has many high-profile Magic players that helped developed the game system, and with the addition of Elder Scrolls coating, this is one of the more attractive card games on PC.
Other Notable Games
Blizzard’s Hearthstone is the unsung champion of deck-building games on all platforms, a benchmark for all other games in terms of gameplay and popularity. Other popular turn-based card games are Ascension, Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, Ancient Enemy, Wingspan and many others.
All card collecting games have in-game purchases, and collecting valuable cards can mean the difference between win or defeat. Experienced players know their cards in-depth and can win with a balanced card deck.
