Edmonton’s Southgate Centre and Calgary’s CF Chinook Centre are listed among the most productive malls in Canada, according to the Canadian Shopping Centre Study 2018 by the Retail Council of Canada.

The study said Southgate was the fifth most productive mall with sales per square foot in 2018 of $1,128, down 1.66 per cent from $1,147.00 in 2017.

Chinook was listed as the seventh most productive mall. The study put sales per square foot in 2018 at $1,081, which was up 0.56 per cent from 2017’s $1,075.

The study listed the following Canadian shopping centres as the most productive in Canada:

  1. Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Toronto, $1,905;
  2. CF Pacific Centre, Vancouver, $1,690;
  3. Oakridge Centre, Vancouver, $1,594;
  4. CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Toronto, $1,556;
  5. Southgate Centre, Edmonton, $1,128;
  6. Square One, Mississauga, Ont., $1,086;
  7. CF Chinook Centre, Calgary, $1,081;
  8. CF Richmond Centre, Richmond, B.C., $1,060;
  9. Metropolis at Metrotown, Burnaby, B.C., $1,040;
  10. CF Rideau Centre, Ottawa, $1,017.00.

CF Market Mall in Calgary was listed as 17th overall at $899 sales per square foot, up 1.35 per cent from $887 in 2017.

“Southgate Centre offers a mix of mid-to-high priced retailers that cater to a regional population,” says the study. ”Best-in-class retailers include the likes of Apple, Zara, Browns Shoes, Aritzia, and Kiehl’s, among others. The centre is home to Edmonton’s only locations for retailers RH Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel and Lego. Upscale retailers include multi-brand Blu’s Womenswear and Le Creuset. The shopping centre currently lacks standalone luxury brand stores as part of its mix.”

The study also says, “CF Chinook Centre features a wide range of tenants, from fast fashion to luxury brands. More affordable retailers include H&M, Old Navy and Zara, as well as typical best-in-class retailers found in top shopping centres nationally,” said the report. “SportChek opened its first women’s-only store in 2017. The centre also features several luxury retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., Burberry and Harry Rosen. Highly productive retailers include Apple, Canada Goose and Tesla.

“Nordstrom opened its first store in Canada at CF Chinook Centre in September of 2014. It includes two restaurant concepts as well as a handful of luxury brands, some not available elsewhere in Calgary and not even in the mall’s Saks store. Hudson’s Bay features more upscale brands than any other Bay store in Alberta, with women’s concessions such as Sandro and Maje. The store also houses a two-level TopShop/TopMan licensed store which helps drive traffic to the host retailer. Saks Fifth Avenue, which opened in February of 2018, includes fashions for women and men as well as a beauty salon and a restaurant. The store carries luxury brand accessories and footwear, though it currently lacks premium ready-to-wear brands found in Saks’ two Toronto stores.”
