Manjit Minhas is well-known as co-founder and co-owner of Minhas Brewery in Calgary and as a judge on CBC’s Dragons’ Den show. She spoke with Calgary’s Business about being an entrepreneur.

Calgary’s Business: What are the main qualities and characteristics a person should have if they want to be a successful entrepreneur?

Minhas: Risk tolerance, flexibility, decisiveness, motivation, creativity and negotiation skills.

CB: What are the key factors pointing to success for a small business owner?

Minhas: Having a great product that has a value proposition, keeping low overhead, persevering when failure strikes, not over leveraging themselves and having great team members.

CB:What characteristics and qualities does a female business person bring to the table that is different from men?

Minhas: The masterful art of multitasking , handling stress and having empathy.

CB: How have you been able to achieve such great success in a male-dominated industry?

Minhas: Great negotiation skills, a lot of hard work, learning from my failures, being innovative with manufacturing processes and products. discipline to sticking to my vision and goals and working with an amazing partner (my brother).

CB:If you were not a beer entrepreneur, what would you be doing?

Minhas: Working in the oil industry as an engineer.
