Mario Toneguzzi is a Troy Media reporter based in CalgaryMichael Brown, who spearheaded the development of East Village in downtown Calgary, is leaving as CEO of Calgary Municipal Land Corp. to become President of Trico Homes in January.

Brown was also a key driver of the River’s District Plan which includes the development of a new event centre in the Victoria Park neighbourhood as a new home for the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of the Trico Homes team. Eleanor and Wayne (Chiu, owners of Trico) have created something very special beyond homebuilding. Trico is a community builder that creates life changing moments for Calgarians and I can’t wait to contribute and share my experiences with this highly engaged group of people,” said Brown in a statement.

“I believe Michael will be a strong and thoughtful leader as well as a valued collaborator with our stakeholders. I look forward to an exciting and prosperous future for Trico Homes,” said Wayne Chiu, CEO and founder of Trico Homes.

Brown joined the CMLC as its president and CEO in 2011.

“In January 2020, Michael will immerse himself in a new opportunity to provide leadership in a different capacity in Calgary’s development scene – namely, as president of one of Calgary’s leading home builders, Trico Homes,” said Randy Magnussen, chair of the board of CMLC.

“During his time leading the strategic direction of our organization, Michael worked closely with our board of directors, the City of Calgary, and key community and business partners to deliver dozens of major infrastructure programs in support of the East Village Master Plan and, more recently, the Rivers District Master Plan.

“Under Michael’s leadership, the CMLC team proved so capable in urban redevelopment and placemaking that our shareholder, the City of Calgary, expanded CMLC’s mandate in 2016 to extend our community-building influence and our capacity for value-creation beyond the boundaries of the Rivers District. Michael’s strength as a CEO was in his expert ability to maintain an organizational dynamic conducive to success. He built a powerhouse team that is nimble, responsive, forward-thinking and innovative and inspired them to do great things.”
