Takes over the 225-room hotel near the Calgary International Airport, rebrands it the Acclaim Hotel

Mario ToneguzziAlberta hotel operator Clique Hotels and Resorts continues to expand in the Calgary and Canmore markets.

The company has been selected by Temple Hotels Inc. to operate the Acclaim Hotel Calgary Airport on Barlow Trail.

Clique takes over the 225-room hotel near the Calgary International Airport that it built in 2009 and sold in 2013. The hotel has been rebranded as the Acclaim Hotel by Clique and has more than 9,000 square feet of event and conference space.

“We’ve proven we can compete with the top global brands and we are excited to have the Acclaim back in our hotel portfolio,” said Jim Muir, president of Clique Hotels and Resorts.

Clique operates three hotels in Calgary and five in Canmore.

Canmore resorts include: The Malcolm Hotel at Spring Creek, Copperstone Resort, Stoneridge Mountain Resort, Blackstone Mountain Lodge, and Falcon Crest Lodge. Calgary locations include Hotel Clique, Applause Hotel and the Acclaim Hotel.

All three Calgary hotels are located in the airport area.

“Over the last few years we’ve seen an increase in demand year over year in the northeast,” said Muir. “However, our big issue is that the supply is increasing faster than the demand and there’s a lot of hotels that have popped up there.

“Our biggest market is going to be our park-and-fly program – Stay, Park and Travel. In other words, you can stay at the Acclaim Hotel and park your car for a week for not much more than the cost of parking for a week, which provides tremendous value for travellers. So basically they can start their vacation early if they’re heading down to Mexico or the Caribbean. It’s a great alternative.

“The other big market for us is going to be airport traffic whether they’re distressed passengers or people making overnight connections through YYC, and then there’s sports teams and corporate markets. We want to grow both those markets.”

The Acclaim Hotel opened in 2009. It was originally built by Clique Hotels and was the first hotel to locate north of Barlow Trail. Within its first six months, the Acclaim was the leader in the market. In 2013, it underwent an expansion of 103 rooms and 6,000 square feet of event space and was sold to Temple Hotels Inc.

The hotel features the first Pacini Ristorante Grill in Western Canada. It’s one of the top performing restaurants in the franchise. Other Calgary firsts include rooftop hot tubs and televisions in the bathrooms.

Barry Lewis, general manager of Hotel Clique and Applause Hotel in Calgary, is the new general manager at Acclaim Hotel.

In November 2018, Clique had a grand opening for Canmore’s first four-star luxury hotel, the Malcolm Hotel.

“Fortunately for us, the international market continues to be strong,” said Muir about the company’s presence in Canmore. “During the peak seasons, we experience a lot of demand and strong occupancies. But the regional market is quite soft right now. From previous years, we’ve noticed less demand for meetings and seminars.”

Clique has been in operation for over 20 years and has grown more than 300 per cent in the last 10 years.

It attributes its success to increasing a property’s revenue by improving guest satisfaction.

Clique has more than 500 staff in eight hotels and resorts.
